While on a school retreat, I was about to leave the bathroom stall when I heard my classmates quietly mocking my and my sister’s imperfect English and our difficulty adjusting socially and culturally as recent immigrants. In “Entrapped,” I capture myself being pulled violently back by toilet paper, portraying my inability to confront them. The enclosed restroom door reveals my internal battle of feeling trapped. Through the monochromatic gray, I wanted to imbue the viewer with a sense of dreariness, guilt, and vulnerability. Unable to step out of my stall, I questioned if I even had enough willpower to create the life I wanted for myself.
