Society tends to view patients with sadness or sympathy. However, my visit to the hospital when I was nine to see my sister Ivy recovering from tonsil surgery felt different. In “The COLOR Series,” the origami dove on the floor in the top painting represents the vital hope I saw from the patients. The lavender string around the boy reveals the delicate nature of youth as well as gentleness as depicted by the boy’s relationship with the puppy. In the second painting, the blue string surrounding the girl represents everyday tranquility brought by small comforts such as watching one’s favorite show. In the third painting, the Green string caressing the elderly woman represents the vibrancy of life and the power of memory. By revealing a symbolic dimension that flows through each patient, I capture an imaginative aspect of their lives to reveal their untold stories.
